Start with the visible difference

SSAW pipe has a helical seam. LSAW pipe has a seam running along its length. Both names refer to submerged arc welding, but the forming routes differ: spiral pipe is commonly formed from strip, while longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe is commonly formed from plate. UOE is one plate-forming route. These descriptions help identify the product, but they are not a ranking of finished-pipe quality.

Let the project define the shortlist

First confirm which routes the project specification permits. Then compare the required diameter, wall thickness, grade, toughness, dimensions and service conditions against each proposed supply route. Requirements for pressure service, structural loading, low-temperature operation or installation can change the evaluation. A supplier's available size range is useful commercial information, but the final choice should follow the engineering requirements rather than a generic claim that one seam type is always better.

Compare evidence on equal terms

For both options, request the material specification, manufacturing description and proposed inspection plan. Review how weld examination, dimensional verification and any required pressure testing will be documented. Agree traceability, third-party inspection points and the final document package. If a proposal changes the specified route, treat it as a technical alternative: record the differences and obtain the project's acceptance before placing the order.

Include installation and logistics

Pipe length, end geometry, coating cutbacks and handling arrangements affect the site as well as the purchase price. Confirm that transport limits and lifting plans suit the proposed delivery. Compare total quoted scope and schedule after technical requirements are aligned. This approach makes the SSAW-versus-LSAW decision a documented procurement choice, with the reasons visible to engineers, buyers and construction teams.

This guide supports procurement discussions. Final design, material selection and acceptance requirements should be confirmed by the responsible project engineer. It does not state Shenzhou’s certification or an unverified manufacturing range.
