A manufacturing route, not a complete specification
SSAW means spiral submerged arc welded pipe. Steel strip is formed into a cylinder with a helical seam, which is joined by submerged arc welding. The process name describes how the pipe is made; it does not, by itself, define the steel grade, allowable operating pressure, dimensional tolerances or inspection requirements. Buyers should begin with the project specification and confirm that the proposed manufacturing route is accepted for the intended service.
Describe the pipe and the service together
A useful enquiry includes outside diameter, wall thickness, length, quantity, grade and the governing standard with its agreed edition. Add the transported medium, installation location and relevant design conditions. State the required end preparation and whether bare, externally coated or internally lined pipe is needed. If the order includes fittings or special pieces, identify them separately so their fabrication and inspection scope can be priced clearly.
Turn quality expectations into deliverables
Ask for a proposed inspection and test plan before production. It should connect material identification, dimensional checks, weld examination and any specified pressure testing to clear acceptance criteria. Request a sample document package so the purchasing and engineering teams can agree the required records. A traceability plan should explain how delivered pipe numbers connect to material and test information. Avoid treating a general phrase such as 'fully tested' as a substitute for defined methods, coverage and reporting.
Compare the delivered scope
Evaluate offers on the same basis: pipe specification, coating system, inspection responsibility, packing, freight terms and delivery sequence. Clarify how coating repairs, transport damage and document discrepancies will be handled. The strongest purchase order is one that gives the manufacturer, inspector and site team the same definition of an acceptable delivery.
