Understand the three descriptions
3PE, also called 3LPE, is a multilayer external coating that combines an epoxy layer, an adhesive and a polyethylene outer layer. FBE is fusion-bonded epoxy, applied as a powder system under controlled conditions. Liquid epoxy describes a different application form and may be specified as an external coating or an internal lining. An epoxy label alone does not tell a buyer the formulation, intended exposure or approved service conditions.
Match the system to the exposure
Begin with operating temperature, soil or water conditions, installation method and expected handling. Ask whether abrasion, impact, immersion or sunlight needs particular attention. For buried or submerged pipelines, coordinate coating selection with the corrosion-control design, including cathodic protection where specified. ISO 21809-1 addresses plant-applied three-layer PE and PP coatings for relevant pipeline service; water projects may reference different system standards. Use the project's chosen standard and edition rather than treating familiar abbreviations as interchangeable specifications.
Ask how application quality is controlled
Request a coating procedure and inspection plan covering surface preparation, application conditions, thickness, cure and the specified continuity or holiday testing. Clarify which adhesion or other qualification tests apply, their acceptance criteria and the records required. Define permitted repair methods before production. These details are more useful than an unsupported promise of a fixed service life, because coating performance depends on material selection, application and the actual environment.
Close the field-joint gap
The pipe body, cutbacks, fittings and field joints need compatible protection. Confirm the field-joint system, installation procedure and repair materials with the project team. Agree protective packing and handling instructions, then inspect for transport damage at receipt. Buying the complete protection package makes responsibility clearer and reduces ambiguity between factory coating and site work.
